Leadership & Service Programs is housed within the Center for Student Involvement & Leadership at the University of Iowa Division of Student Life. Our programs help students develop lifelong leadership skills, offers incredible experiential service learning, and provides civic engagement opportunities to students both on campus and in communities.
Hawkeye Service Teams
The University of Iowaâs Hawkeye Service Teams exist to promote service learning, social justice, and community building to University of Iowa students through a service break experience.
The LeaderShape Iowa Institute is an interactive, energizing, and unique experience that builds leadership skills no other program can match. Students spent six days off-campus in Washington, Iowa engaging in an intensive leadership experience that included a highly interactive and energizing leadership enhancement program. The program provided participants with the tools necessary to become visionary leaders. LeaderShape occurs annually before spring semester classes begin in January.
Leadership Development Funds
The Tom Rocklin Fund for Leadership Development is intended to help promising student leaders fund meaningful summer leadership experiences or activities to enhance their undergraduate careers and skills at Iowa.
MLK Day of Service
Recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthdate has been a tradition at the University of Iowa since 1969, and the national holiday has been observed through human rights programs since its inception in 1986. In 1990 the University initiated the Human Rights convocation program. Afternoon classes were canceled to encourage student, faculty, and staff participation in programs that encourage dialogue about diversity and reinforce the principle that the University is a forum for the free exchange of ideas. The convocation has been an opportunity for serious thinking by all of us about issues of social justice, human rights, and world peace.
Student Involvement Fair
Find your way to engage! Visit with representatives from over 200 student orgs, nonprofit agencies, and community-based organizations to learn how you can get involved. Whether it's a volunteer opportunity, sports club, or anything in between -- there's bound to be something for you!
In conjunction with the United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties, UI Student United Way and Leadership & Service Programs is dedicated to improving health, education, and income by connecting students to the local community through service and advocacy. In order to accomplish this, we implemented the Serve Iowa initiative in October 2017. Leadership & Service Programs and Student United Way Ambassadors coordinate with United Way's existing nonprofit partners to offer weekly volunteer opportunities to all University of Iowa students.
Student Strengths Sessions
Request one of these sessions or work with a staff member to make a custom one for your group! Sessions are general about 1 hour long, and include a variety of activities for students to engage in. All participants are not required to have taken Strengths, but it can be helpful.
Hawkeye Leadership Awards
We gather each spring to recognize outstanding students, advisers, and organizations for their work and efforts over the past year. The Hawkeye Leadership Award nominations and applications are available each year to the over 500 clubs and organizations on campus. A team of amazing volunteers read and judged all of our Hawkeye Award nominations.
